Next students play game they guess what is this? After that students listening conversation and complete conversation. And students do homework that is find conversation and write into notebook.
From this teaching, I think she is not focus about listening because she practices listening of students little bit. She should practice more than this and I will improve my teaching about material and the process of teaching in the next time. Authentic materials can help students have good learning.

Tips for Teaching ESL Grammar

Reference : http://www.brighthubeducation.com/esl-teaching-tips/71825-tips-for-teaching-esl-grammar/
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today I read teaching English article the topic is “Tips for Teaching ESL Grammar” written by: Louanne Piccolo. Grammar is the way that we put words to make correct sentences and convey meaning in any language. Tips and Guidelines in Teaching ESL Grammar have many tips.
First, students must have plenty of examples of the structure and understand when and how to use it.
Second, explanations must cover the majority of instances because students are sure to encounter exceptions along the way.
Third, detail confuses students so explanations must be simple and clear.
Fourth, Role-playing and language games can be fun and give students the opportunity to use a grammatical structure practically
The last, Students need to experiment by rearranging sentences and playing with them to get a feel for the language.
I think grammar is very difficult and boring to teach. However, if a teacher understands the grammatical concepts, is capable of explaining grammar and its structures clearly and simply, follows up with appropriate games, exercises and role-playing activities, Teacher will be creating a context for fun and interesting ESL grammar lessons.

When they write that wrong, they cannot successful of teaching. Some person has mistaken about rubric. They don’t conclude the total number of points and write the points wrong the qualities table.

Rubrics is communicating expectations for an assignment, providing focused feedback on works in progress, and grading final products. It used to grade student work but they can serve another, more important, role as well: Rubrics can teach as well as evaluate.

In conclusion, enabling objectives are different from terminal objectives. You should plan your teaching that activities are smooth to teach. If someone can do like this, you will get the good point and good teaching.

Today there are 5 people  presentation. Each person has mistake about lesson plan. They don’t know how to write enabling objectives and terminal objectives. When they write enabling objectives and terminal objectives wrong, they cannot achieve for teaching including evaluation because it isn’t relevance. If we know it, we can write lesson plan correctly.

Enabling objectives come from indicator what teacher would like students to know first and terminal objectives are what students can do after they finish study. For example, enabling objective you write: students will be able to understand preposition. Terminal objective you write: students will be able to ask and answer question about the direction of place. If you can write like this, you can evaluate students correctly. Teacher said that they have only rubric criteria but they don’t have the instrument to evaluation. So, you should design it. When you teach, you should choose 1 content that clearly don’t teach many content. You should think that after you finish teaching students can use this language function in real life.

In conclusion, enabling objectives are different from terminal objectives. You should plan your teaching that activities are smooth and choose only 1 content to teach. If someone can do like this, you will get the good point and good teaching.

Motivating Students by Modifying Evaluation Methods

A foreign language learner’s motivation can be influenced by many factors: social, psychological education, and economical. Teachers can do a lot to motivate their students by being observant, understanding, informed, and tactful.
Norm-referenced evaluation is like athletic competition in the prize winners are scare. Criterion-referenced evaluation measures a student’s performance by comparing it to a defined of knowledge or skills <Bachman 1990: 74-76>. The students are evaluated according to standards, not each other. Objectives-referenced evaluation works well with essays and should be an integral part of the everyday teaching process. Teachers should not unrealistic demands or judgment criteria for their students, but rather depend on objectives referencing to evaluate both their students’ performance and their own teaching. When teachers evaluate students’ performance, it should be done as one of several means to help students succeed in learning. Analytic assessment point out specific aspects of a students’ performance.
Students have different tolerance because they differ from other students in such diverse aspects as their family, educational history, learning strategies, and attitude for foreign language learning <Eillis 1994>. These are 3 techniques for improving how we evaluate our students’ work:
1.    Diachronic evaluation.
2.    Split method.
3.    Dynamic view.

Learning a foreign language is a long and complex task. Students should encourage their selves  to learn. These are many methods to motivate them to learn well like focus on success and achievement, use objectives-referenced testing. I think it is useful for teachers to choose these methods to motivate students.

Today I listen VOA Learning English, they bring you news about agriculture, in Special English. Each year, bad food sickens about one in six Americans. But, proposed new rules raise hopes to improve food safety. Officials say the changes could prevent more than 1 million cases of food-related illnesses each year. The new rules were proposed recently, exactly two years after President Obama signed the Food Safety Modernization Act. The rules are the first step in putting that law into effect. They represent the biggest changes in food safety since the 1930. The new law makes the Food and Drug Administration responsible for preventing food borne illnesses. Experts say this is a change in the way that the FDA has dealt with disease outbreaks in the past. Congress passed the law after a series of outbreaks that were linked to spinach, peanut butter and other foods.

The agency is proposing to require food manufacturers to show that they have identified where contamination is most likely to happen. Manufacturers would also have to show that they have taken steps to prevent problems. The proposed rules also deal with safety in growing and harvesting fruits and vegetables. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that establishing all of the provisions of the law will cost the government $1.4 billion. The Grocery Manufacturers of America, an industry group, has not released an estimate of what it will cost producers. But FDA Deputy Commissioner Michael Taylor says the new rules are worth the cost. He says there should be reductions in illness and disruptions in the food supply, and increases in buyer confidence. He says, when these issues are considered, the benefits outweigh the costs of the new law.

To conclude, I think from I listen VOA Learning English it’s can help me to practice listening skill to better.

Why “money” is more important than “environment”
“Money” is more important than “Environment” because money is one of the keys to life. And it’s used to better the life of the individual making it as well as the life of others. If you have a lot of money you can buy everything that you want such as food, clothes, and etc. You can make solving disaster. When the disaster from environment happen you can buy food, medicine, water that confronting with natural disaster. You can buy the trees for make the big forest and building a good environment.

Why “money” is more important than “environment”
“Environment” is more important than “Money” because if you have a good environment you can have good air for breathe and living. If you have environment you can have good health in your life. You think money is important but in fact money is not everything. Can you buy health for a life or buying ten years of your childhood? Can you buy a friendship or a family? No, you can’t. In reality, there are lots of things that you can’t buy from money. The money will become only pieces of paper. That’s the first reason that shows the environment is more important than money.

A famous war that happened in Iron Age Thailand was war that happened with Burma.

Some examples of Iron Age technology are A battle axe designed for  combat.  Shovel and spade for agriculture. Steel used to make tools.  If I lived in Iron Age Thailand I would create weapon from bronze and iron for war. And shovel and spade for agriculture.

The ancient Greeks developed notions of ideal proportions and mathematics, which they applied to sculpture and architecture. People began use the metal copper and bronze to make tools and jewelry. The lifestyle of the people change from the living agriculture to urban area. The metal was more easy to use than stone, bone, and wood. The houses roofs were made with clay tiles and wall with stones. Baskets were sealed with marks pressed on them. Fences of stonewalls were made to protect their houses. They communicate by use symbolic such as information signs, planting and map.

Aristotle was a Greek philosopher who wrote about many subjects and made a number of important contributions to science based ones such as physics, biology, anatomy, geology and zoology. Aristotle was a student of Plato. The influence of Aristotle’s work on the physical sciences spread far and wide, offering well thought out theory and reasoning that would prevail for many years to come before eventually being replaced by modern physics.

From Bronze Age I learned about the technology, tool, houses and famous person who lived in Ancient Greece. If I lived in Bronze Age I will create the weapon from metal and create clothes from wool.

People lived to be about 40 years old. It’s amazing because the human can found technology and can make the tool for hunting animals by use things in natural.

The humans make first produced the first stone tools in East Africa and ended with the domestication of certain animals such as sheep, goat and cow, and the smelting of copper to produce metal. They found technology by use stone or knife for hunting, fishing, and plant. And the people in Stone Age got food by hunting animal by use axe or knife. They live in the cave and built the house closely together and made from stone or leaf. The spaces between the houses were filled with rubbish and turf for against the wind. They create clothes from left and wool.

Dang lived in the Stone Age. She could make tools from stone and she got her food by finding it in nature. She built the house by made from stone and leaf. She could speak, but didn’t understand the alphabet. She took a bath in river and brushes the teeth by use charcoal and branch. She likes to eat snack and insects.

I think the people in Stone Age very intelligent because they can found technology and they can use stone and knife for hunting animals. If I lived in Stone Age I would create clothes and house from natural.

Today I read article online about burning garbage. It is dangerous to your health and our environment. It will also add to the general background level of air pollution. I have three alternative to solve burning garbage. First is reduce, you can reduce their waste by purchasing in bulk, buying items with less packaging. Second is reuse, you can refill a purchased bottle of water with water from home to minimize the number of plastic bottles being discarded. The last is recycle, you can split items to recycle such as glass, newspaper, plastic. Everyone can do it.

This pollution can change the world because burning garbage can cause the air pollution, after that it will cause "Global Warming". Then, the effect of this increase may be to alter the Earth's climate by increasing the average global temperature. So I hate air pollution because air pollution can result from both human and natural actions. Natural events that pollute the air include forest fires, volcanic eruptions. Pollution from natural occurrences aren’t very often. You help keep your family and the environment safe and healthy, “don't burn garbage”.

The Bronze Age started about 5,500 years ago. There are about 5,000 people in Bronze Age.  And the Iron Age took place about 1,700 – 3,400 years ago in Thailand.

First, the Stone Age very amazing because the people don’t have technology but they can found technology by use stone or knife for hunting, fishing, and plant.             Then, the people in Bronze Age hunting food by farming simple. They make the tool for hunting animals from an alloy (a mixture of metals) called bronze such as ax, bow, spear and arrow. They live in the house from wood and stone. They create clothes from weave.

Next, the people in Iron Age hunting food by farming complex. They make the tool for hunting animals such as sword. They live in the house from concrete, stone and wood. They create clothes from silk, cotton and leather. In this age have a lot of wars with army solider. A famous war that happened in Iron Age Thailand was war that happened with Burma.

I think all of the ages are very important for the people because it’s beginning of technology, tool, alphabet and number. We are lucky that live in digital age. If I live in the past I would like to do clothes from cotton, beautiful house, medicine and vaccine for the people.

How to teach directions

Today I read article online about How to teach directions. It’s about  directions can be challenging to teach however its practical uses are readily understood by students and there are many fun activities you can incorporate into your lessons to make them more enjoyable.

Warm Up - Directions.Get your students interested in learning how to give directions. On the board draw a rough map of the neighborhood, just a few streets and the school will do. Ask “Where is the school?” Have a student come to the board and point it out. Then ask where a few other landmarks are and have students draw and label them on your map.

Introduce - Directions Vocabulary.Introduce the words about directions  ‘right’ and ‘left’. Try to elicit the meaning or translation of these words from the students and write them on the board with arrows demonstrating each direction. Once their meanings have been made clear to the class, demonstrate proper pronunciation.

Practice.Ask students to do some choral repetition. Call on students to model pronunciation in order to check their progress on the individual level and do some quick comprehension tests. Ask a student to “Turn right” or “Turn left” with a demonstration and after a few individual checks feel free to have the whole class join in making sure.

Introduce - Directions Phrases.Introduce the following phrases:
-Turn right/left
-Go straight.
-You’ll see it on the right/left.
-It’s across from (the school, the park, the post office)
-It’s next to (the police station, the playground, the library)
Explain the meaning of each phrase and lead some pronunciation practice exercises.

Practice.Mark your imaginary present location on a rough map like the one from Step 1 and ask your students “How do I get to the (____________)?” Call on one student to give just the first section of directions, then another student for the second section, and then another until you’ve reached your destination. Repeat until your students feel comfortable enough with the new phrases to give a whole set of directions on their own. Next, mark a beginning position on the map and give a set of directions. Ask students “Where am I?” to see if they were able to follow along with you and repeat. If necessary, go back to review anything that seems difficult for the students.

Practice – Directions. After demonstrating the dialogue, ask the students to work in pairs to practice giving directions. The model dialogue should resemble this:
A: Excuse me. How do I get to the ~?
B: Turn left. Turn right at the 3rd corner. You’ll see it on your left.
A: Thank you!
B: You’re welcome.

Production – Directions. For further practice, if appropriate for your students and school, create a maze of desks in your classroom and have students give directions to a blindfolded classmate.
Ask for translations or demonstrations of all associated vocabulary and phrases as well as directions from one place to another. Encourage students to ask questions if something is unclear. Start the next few classes off with direction related warm up activities to help students retain all this new vocabulary.

When teaching directions, it is incredibly important to choose one structure and stick to it so that your students do not become unnecessarily confused. The examples above use the structure ‘Turn right/left at the 1st/2nd/3rd corner’ but you may choose to teach ‘Turn right/left onto Smith Street.’ or ‘Go three blocks and turn right/left.’ or ‘Take the 1st/2nd/3rd right/left after the school.’
Happy teaching!

Today I read about Appropriate Classroom Materials. In the ESL teaching world there is currently a continuing debate as to which type of class materials for oral and listening activities is more suitable. The choices are between authentic dialogues and materials taken from authentic sources such as radio interviews, magazine articles etc. and scripted dialogues prepared especially for the lesson by the teacher or some other English teaching source. Generally, the argument for authentic materials is that the materials should represent what learners will be confronted with in everyday life when using English. On the other hand, proponents of scripted materials feel that by preparing the material students are not introduced to issues that may be beyond the scope of the current level. Both arguments are equally valid, and it is my own practice to use both types of materials in my classes. Below is a consideration of what I consider the main advantages and disadvantages of both types of materials.

Today I listen VOA special English Agriculture report about Cacao or cocoa trees grown in hot, rainy areas of Africa, Asia and Central and South America. Their beans are used to make cocoa powder, cocoa butter and of course chocolate. There are five to six million growers, maybe more. Many are poor family farmers with only a few hectares.

The trees produce the most pods when they are ten, but they are still productive long. The workers use large knives to cut the lower pods and long tools to remove pods from high on the tree. A half gram of chocolate requires about four hundred beans. The world cocoa foundation says an average pod contains twenty to fifty beans and growers may lose perhaps one-third of their harvest to diseases and insects. But now scientists have genetic maps of two kinds of cocoa trees.

The average West African cocoa farmer produces about four hundred kilos of beans per hectare. But Howard-Yana Shapiro, head of plant science and external research at Mars, thinks that science could greatly increase the yield.

Meredith Schafer is a graduate student. They were traveling in the state of North Dakota on a project. They noticed pretty yellow flowers. Farmer grow canola for seeds to make cooking oil. Canola is used for animal feed and biofuel but the canola plants they saw were not growing in farm fields.

The researchers decided to test the plants. They had brought along special testing papers for the project they were working on. They crushed some of the leaves in water and added the test strips. The results is the weedy canola plants contained  genetic changes. If a plant is genetically modified, its mean genes have been changed to produce desired qualities.

The researchers traveled more than five thousand kilometers to find canola. They stopped every eight kilometers to count plants and take samples to test vehicle. They finding at a recent meeting of  the  Ecological Society of America. The scientists found canola plants in almost half of the places they investigated.

They tested a total of two hundred eighty – eight plants. And the plants contained genes from genetically engineered canola. Some crop plants are modified to resist damage from the chemicals that farmers spray to kill weeds. There are two proteins that can give canola the ability to resist two commonly used herbicides.

Today I listen VOA special English education report about one-fifth of Americans age six to nineteen are considered overweight. To reduce that number some school are teaching children to make better food choices.

The EW Stokes Public Charter School in Washington has started to include foods in third-grade math and English program. The school formed a partnership with Seedling Project, an environmental in California. Peter Nalli is a curriculum director for a program called Farm to Desk says “ One of the main components of our program is our belief that if kids are exposed to positive and healthy food”
The students in eight and nine years old in math class how to make combinations. For example, they figured the difference combinations with a pizza and two toppings. The school buys most of food from local farms but the school has a garden for the students to grow some of the vegetables. Some teachers says “students love its” and “we have a salad bar at the school.” The students love salad bar, fruits and vegetables.

Students learn from teachers and outside experts, like the owner of an environmentally friendly business. They also learn how to prepare business plan that they can use to help pay for college.
